As it is ‘Book Week’, and I am a lover of books, I am so excited by this book, written in response to the loss/removal of nature words from the Oxford Junior Dictionary!
Nature words such as bluebell, cygnet, heron and pasture have been lost from the Oxford Junior Dictionary, in order to reflect the language that ‘children are using’ and to reflect ‘the language children are encouraged to use in the classroom’.
The words have been dropped because they are not being used.
The answer is not to petition for their reinstatement in the dictionary.
The answer is to use the words, and use them often, so that they become part of children’s language once again!
The book is big and beautiful, and contains poems, a lovely present for any child who loves nature. Varies quite a bit in price from the RRP, so shop around if you want to buy one.
